A friend recently tune me into a cool technology in wind power that uses a turbine that works with all fluids (steam, water, wind etc.). Manufactured by Sambrabec Inc. in Quebec Canada This wind turbine apparently has a number of advantages over traditional prop based turbines. I would say the first advantage is not looks. As you can see on the left it looks a lot like the mutated children of a birdhouse and air raid siren.
Looks aside, Sambrabec claims the turbine will function in winds as low as 5 km/h can easily stand winds up to 250 km/h and gather at least 50% of the energy available in the wind passing through it. Anyone that’s looked at the specs of a standard wind turbine will know that this is a pretty amazing claim.
In addition the Sambrabec system is silent, vibration free and requires minimal maintenance compared to bladed turbines. What I really like though it that its modular. If you have bought 1 unit and discovered you need more power you can actually buy another unit and stack it on the first (as you see in the picture) try that with a windmill.
So what it cost? a 5KW system all in with controllers, batteries etc. will set you back around 25k. Their largest kit is 20KW which will cost around 60k.
Just to be clear, this technology very interesting but everything I’ve written here comes straight from their website (even that isn’t very professional looking). Meaning, take it all with a grain of salt until I can find an other source of info.
Check out the site for yourself here… http://pages.infinit.net/sambrab/history.htm
Let me know if you’ve seen other info on this system.
